2020 BETFRED WORLD MATCHPLAY TO TAKE PLACE BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

Today is the opening night of the 2020 World Matchplay, which is taking place at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire.

Tonight’s action features the two time world runner up Simon Whitlock taking on PC10 winner Ryan Joyce, 2017 World Masters winner Krzysztof Ratajski takes on World Grand Prix quarter finalist Jermaine Wattimena, 2007 winner James Wade faces Keegan Brown, two time winner Michael van Gerwen kicks off against 2011 World Grand Prix runner up Brendan Dolan and 2018 winner Gary Anderson faces four time PDC major semi finalist Justin Pipe.

With three former World Matchplay winners taking it to the oche, it’s set to be a very tasty night’s action of darts! But will there also be shocks and surprises on the opening night of this year’s tournament?

Matches are the best of 19 legs with each game must be won by two clear legs, with up to a maximum of five additional legs being played before the sixth additional leg is sudden-death. Should the match reach 12-12, then the 25th leg would be the final and deciding leg.

Simon Whitlock v Ryan Joyce

Leg 1

Simon Whitlock fires in the first 180 of the tournament with his first three darts. Ryan Joyce also fires in his first maximum too later in the first leg. However it’s first blood to Whitlock after the Aussie takes out a 78 finish on double 6. Whitlock 1-0 Joyce.

Leg 2

Whitlock fires in his second maximum in as many legs to leave 84 and he duly takes it out on the bull for an early break! Fast start from The Wizard! Whitlock 2-0 Joyce.

Leg 3

A third 180 helps Whitlock to leave 28 after 15 darts, but then misses six darts at that very target. Joyce has a chance to steal, but misses tops for an 80 finish and Whitlock finds double 4 last dart to save a leg that he nearly looked like throwing away! Whitlock 3-0 Joyce.

Leg 4

Both players trade maximums in the fourth leg. Whitlock has a chance on 80 for 4-0 but misses a dart at tops for it! However fantastic bottle from Joyce though as he rattles in a 108 checkout on double 16 to get his first leg on the board! Whitlock 3-1 Joyce.

Leg 5

Joyce has first crack on 109 but the Geordie misses double 16 to take it out. Whitlock then misses the bull on 90 for a 4-1 lead and Joyce pins double 8 to go a leg behind at the first commercial break. Whitlock 3-2 Joyce.

Leg 6

Joyce misses two darts at double to level the match and Whitlock punishes with an 88 checkout on double 7 to stop the rot! Whitlock 4-2 Joyce.

Leg 7

Whitlock misses the bull for a 126 finish, but returns to hit double 4 with the last dart in hand for a three leg cushion after Joyce missed double 19 for a 118 finish. Whitlock 5-2 Joyce.

Leg 8

Disaster for Joyce as he misses double 18 for a 76 finish and then misses double 7 after hitting the double 2 by accident when trying to split it for double 8. Whitlock then puts away double 8 to move four clear of the Newcastle player. Whitlock 6-2 Joyce.

Leg 9

Whitlock moves to within three legs of victory after taking out double 16 last dart for a 92 finish. Whitlock 7-2 Joyce.

Leg 10

Joyce still keeping his faint hopes alive after taking out 70 on double 8 to stop the rot but he’s four legs behind Whitlock going into the second break! Whitlock 7-3 Joyce.

Leg 11

Whitlock zooms his way to leave 32 after 15 darts and then gets the double 16 first dart to move within two of the second round, despite a late 177 pressure shot from Joyce in leaving double 6. Whitlock 8-3 Joyce.

Leg 12

Whitlock misses tops for an 80 finish to move within a leg of the match and Joyce takes out 53 on double 18 to bag a fourth leg. Whitlock 8-4 Joyce.

Leg 13

Joyce has a lifeline after Whitlock misses four darts at double, but he wastes his golden chance after missing double 16 for a 105 finish and Whitlock sinks double 8 to move within a leg of victory. Is that the final blow? Whitlock 9-4 Joyce.

Leg 14

Whitlock fires in his fifth 180 of the match, but it’s Joyce who gets first crack at double, which he misses two at double 18 to save it. He then misses two more darts at double 8 and that’s his final act of the tournament after Whitlock nails double 18 for a 13 darter and a comfortable victory!

Krzysztof Ratajski v Jermaine Wattimena

Leg 1

Ratajski gets the first 180 for the match, but then misses tops for an 82 checkout and Wattimena picks his pocket with a superb 118 finish on double 19! Ratajski 0-1 Wattimena.

Leg 2

An instant response from Ratajski as he takes out a 132 finish on tops to break straight back! Ratajski 1-1 Wattimena.

Leg 3

Ratajski hits his second maximum, then later on misses double 16 for a 70 checkout. He eventually picks out double 4 next visit to move infront. Ratajski 2-1 Wattimena.

Leg 4

Ratajski is on a roll now after he fires in a 96 checkout on double 18 for an 11 dart break of throw! Ratajski 3-1 Wattimena.

Leg 5

Ratajski follows up his 11 darter with a 14 darter on tops to go three clear at the first break. The Pole has turned it on since the second leg, averaging over 108! Ratajski 4-1 Wattimena.

Leg 6

Ratajski hits his third maximum to leave 82, but misses tops to make it five on the spin, and Wattimena finally stops the rot with a superb 95 finish going 19, D19, D19! Superb! Ratajski 4-2 Wattimena.

Leg 7

Ratajski lands maximum number 4, but later on misses double 16 for a 109 finish and Wattimena rolls home a superb 120 checkout on tops to break back and cut the gap to one! Game back on! Ratajski 4-3 Wattimena.

Leg 8

Relief for Ratajski as he takes out 102 on double 16 for a 12 darter for a break back and a superb response! Ratajski 5-3 Wattimena.

Leg 9

Wattimena begins the leg with his first 180, then leaves 32 after 12 darts. However he can only watch as Ratajski takes out 70 on double 16 to restore his three leg gap! Ratajski 6-3 Wattimena.

Leg 10

Ratajski takes out 56 on double 10 for a 15 darter and a four leg gap into the second break. Ratajski 7-3 Wattimena.

Leg 11

Ratajski hits his fifth maximum to leave 28, but the Pole misses three darts at double 14 and double 7 before eventually landing the madhouse double 1 to go within two of victory! Ratajski 8-3 Wattimena.

Leg 12

Wattimena keeps the fight going after he takes out 81 on double 12 for a 14 darter! Ratajski 8-4 Wattimena.

Leg 13

A third ton plus finish of the match for Ratajski as he checks out 118 on tops to move within a leg of the second round! Ratajski 9-4 Wattimena.

Leg 14

Ratajski seals off a fine performance after taking out 41 on double 16 for an 11 darter and marches on to the second round! The Pole averaged 107.53, hit 6 180’s, took out 3 100+ plus finishes and hit 50% of his doubles!

James Wade v Keegan Brown

Leg 1

The perfect start from Wade as he takes out an 84 finish on double 11 for an immediate 12 dart break of throw! Wade 1-0 Brown.

Leg 2

The Machine then doubles his lead quicky after taking out 57 on tops for a 14 dart hold. Wade 2-0 Brown.

Leg 3

Brown has a chance to put a leg on the board, but he misses double 9 for a 91 finish and Wade takes out 76 on double 8 to continue his impressive start! Wade 3-0 Brown.

Leg 4

Brown hits the first maximum of the match to leave 88, but he doesn’t get a sniff as Wade ploughs in a superb 104 checkout on tops and the surge continues. Wade 4-0 Brown.

Leg 5

Just what the doctor order for Keegan Brown as he takes out 53 on tops for an 11 darter and to finally get a chalk on the board! Wade leads by three at the first break. Wade 4-1 Brown.

Leg 6

Brown fires in his third maximum of the match and then later on checks out 76 on double 12 for a 12 darter, and to pull another leg back. Wade 4-2 Brown.

Leg 7

Wade finds his first 180 of the game but Brown has first crack at double but misses double 16 for a 104 finish. He eventually picks it out next visit to make it three on the spin and claw the gap to one! Wade 4-3 Brown.

Leg 8

Disaster for Wade as he misses two darts at tops to go 5-3 infront and Brown picks out double 16 with his last dart to level! What a turnaround! Wade 4-4 Brown.

Leg 9

Brown misses tops for a 113 finish, then misses three more darts at doubles to take the lead. Wade steps in, but misses tops and tens for it and Brown sinks double 5 to hit the front! Wade 4-5 Brown.

Leg 10

Nearly the big fish for Brown as he narrowly misses the bull for it! Wade breathes a sigh relief after hitting treble 15 by mistake, he recovers to hit the single 5 and then his favourite double 10 to finally stop the rot. All square going into the second break. Wade 5-5 Brown.

Leg 11

Brown hits two maximums to leave him on 48 after 9 darts and he duly takes it on double 16 with the last dart for a superb 12 darter! Wade 5-6 Brown.

Leg 12

Superb from Wade as he crashes in a 120 checkout on tops to restore parity in this thrilling match. Wade 6-6 Brown.

Leg 13

Brown moves back ahead once more thanks to a 94 checkout on double 6! Wade 6-7 Brown.

Leg 14

We’re all level again as James Wade takes out double 18 second dart for a 14 dart hold. Wade 7-7 Brown.

Leg 15

Huge moment in the match as Brown misses three darts at double to retake the lead and Wade punishes with a 107 checkout on tops to break and retake the lead for the first time since the seventh leg! Wade 8-7 Brown.

Leg 16

Wade moves within a leg of victory after taking out a brilliant 80 finish on the bull. Wade 9-7 Brown.

Leg 17

Brown misses tops and tens to keep the match going and gives Wade a chance at 76 for the match. The Machine squanders a match dart at double 14 to take it out and Brown lands double 10 to force Wade to throw for the match. Wade 9-8 Brown.

Leg 18

Brilliant timing from Brown as he produces a 12 dart leg and a 97 checkout against the throw to send this match into extra time! Wade 9-9 Brown.

Leg 19 (Must win by 2 clear legs)

Brown hits his sixth maximum, then leaves 40 after 12 darts. He misses tops and tens first time but eventually lands double 5 in the next visit to move within one of victory! Wade 9-10 Brown.

Leg 20 (Must win by 2 clear legs)

Brilliant from Wade as he holds his nerve to hit double 8 with the second dart to stay in the match with Brown waiting on 36 to win it! Wade 10-10 Brown.

Leg 21 (Must win by 2 clear legs)

Horrors for Brown as he misses the big 20 for double 16 and Wade punishes severly with a 67 checkout on double 8 for a vital break and he will throw for the match for the second time! Wade 11-10 Brown.

Leg 22 (Must win by 2 clear legs)

Wade hits his second 180 to leave double 18 but Brown puts the pressure on with a 180 of his own to leave double 1. But it’s all in vain as Wade hits double 18 first dart to finally see off a resurgent Brown! Great game!

Michael van Gerwen v Brendan Dolan

Leg 1

Van Gerwen gets first chance on 81, but the world number one misses the big 12 for bull thanks to him aiming for the treble and Dolan mopes up with 46 on double 16 for first blood! Van Gerwen 0-1 Dolan.

Leg 2

Van Gerwen misses tops for a 76 finish, but is left off the hook as Dolan misses double 10 and double 5 for an early break and the world number one posts double 10 with ease to level! Van Gerwen 1-1 Dolan.

Leg 3

Dolan hits two wrong trebles when taking out 100 and Van Gerwen takes out 45 on double 16 for a 17 dart break of throw. Van Gerwen 2-1 Dolan.

Leg 4

Dolan misses double 10 for a 90 finish and then misses three more at the same bed. He’s given a second chance after Van Gerwen misses tops for a 72 finish but Dolan misses two darts at double 7. That’s six darts missed at double in this leg for Dolan and Van Gerwen eventually steals it on double 10 for a two leg gap! That will hurt Dolan! Van Gerwen 3-1 Dolan.

Leg 5

Van Gerwen fires in the first maximum of the game and then takes out 81 on double 12 for a lovely 12 darter. The world number one has a comfy lead going into the first break. Van Gerwen 4-1 Dolan.

Leg 6

Dolan misses the bull for a 164 finish but is given a second chance after Van Gerwen misses three darts at tops and tens. He needs to take advantage and does after hitting double 4 with the last dart and the Northern Irishman stops the rot! Van Gerwen 4-2 Dolan.

Leg 7

Van Gerwen restores his three leg cushion after taking out 52 on double 16. Van Gerwen 5-2 Dolan.

Leg 8

Van Gerwen misses tops for a 74 finish and a four leg lead. Dolan steps in and takes out 70 on double 8 to break MVG’s throw yet again! Van Gerwen 5-3 Dolan.

Leg 9

Dolan fires in his first 180 of the game but Van Gerwen misses the bull for a 161 finish! Dolan eventually picks out double 16 for a 13 dart and he’s now one behind of the world number one! Van Gerwen 5-4 Dolan.

Leg 10

OH MY! DOLAN IS LEVEL! The Northern Irishman takes out a brilliant 128 finish on double 16 to go level with MVG at the second break! The world number one is in a match at the first hurdle! Can he find a way out? Van Gerwen 5-5 Dolan.

Leg 11

Van Gerwen begins the leg with his second 180 and later on misses the bull by a mile for a 124 checkout. Dolan misses double 18 for a 109 finish to lead and Van Gerwen nails double 15 for an important break! Just what was needed! Van Gerwen 6-5 Dolan.

Leg 12

Much more like it from the world number one as he takes out 82 on tops for another 12 darter and to go two clear of Dolan! Van Gerwen 7-5 Dolan.

Leg 13

Dolan hits his second 180 of the game and then takes out 48 on double 8 to keep on Van Gerwen’s tail. Van Gerwen 7-6 Dolan.

Leg 14

Van Gerwen misses tops for a 120 checkout and then after Dolan misses double 16 and goes into the 11 when going for double 8. Van Gerwen fails to capitalise after missing three more darts at double and Dolan picks out double 2 to level once more!! Van Gerwen 7-7 Dolan.

Leg 15

Van Gerwen needs a response and he gets one after picking out double 14 for a crucial 13 darter and to retake the lead! Van Gerwen 8-7 Dolan.

Leg 16

Van Gerwen misses two darts at tops for a 94 finish but returns to hit double 10 for a second 13 darter on the bounce and move within one of victory. He’s starting to find the killer arrows now! Van Gerwen 9-7 Dolan.

Leg 17

Dolan misses double 12 for a screaming 141 checkout but returns after Van Gerwen fails to take out 152. Dolan misses double 12 and double 6 to stay in the match and Van Gerwen though hitting the treble 17 by mistake, recovers to hit double 3 with the last dart in hand to survive a huge scare and progress into Round 2, where he will face Simon Whitlock!

Gary Anderson v Justin Pipe

Leg 1

Anderson misses double 8 and double 4 for a 67 finish but returns to hit double 1 last dart after Pipe failed to take out 100! Anderson 1-0 Pipe.

Leg 2

Anderson hits the first maximum of the match but he’s not in the zone at the moment as he misses tops and then goes in the double 15 when going for double 10 and Pipe levels with a 60 checkout on tops! Anderson 1-1 Pipe.

Leg 3

Anderson retakes the lead after taking out tops for a 16 darter. Anderson 2-1 Pipe.

Leg 4

Not been great but Pipe levels the match after posting double 6. Anderson 2-2 Pipe.

Leg 5

Excellent darts from Pipe as he fires in his first 180 of the game and then takes out a superb 122 checkout on the bull to take the lead into the first break! Anderson 2-3 Pipe.

Leg 6

Anderson misses tops for a 120 checkout but returns to hit double 10 to level the match after Pipe missed double 8 for a 94 checkout to go two clear! Anderson 3-3 Pipe.

Leg 7

A second maximum is fired in for Pipe but it’s Anderson who retakes the lead with a solid 80 checkout on tops. Anderson 4-3 Pipe.

Leg 8

Pipe kicks off the leg with his third maximum and then later on picks out double 16 second dart for a 14 darter to level. Anderson 4-4 Pipe.

Leg 9

Anderson kicks off the leg with a 177, but then misses five darts at double to give Justin Pipe a chance on 124. However Pipe messes it up by hitting the big 11 instead of the 14 and Anderson slots in double 10 to retake the lead in this match. Anderson 5-4 Pipe.

Leg 10

Anderson misses tops for a 104 finish and Pipe nails double 18 to go into the second break level with Anderson! Anderson 5-5 Pipe.

Leg 11

Anderson leaves himself tops after 12 darts and then picks out double 10 with his last dart to edge back infront of this see saw game! Anderson 6-5 Pipe.

Leg 12

Both players begin the leg with maximums, but this could be a huge moment in the match as Pipe misses three darts at double 16 to level and Anderson plucks home a 120 checkout on tops for the break and a two leg gap! Anderson 7-5 Pipe.

Leg 13

Pipe puts in his fifth maximum to leave 65 before Anderson misses tops for a tops-tops 134 checkout. Pipe misses a dart at the same bed to break back and Anderson moves three legs clear after hitting double 10 with the first dart! Anderson 8-5 Pipe.

Leg 14

Anderson is motoring to the line now after he takes out double 10 for a 14 darter and moves within a leg of the match. Anderson 9-5 Pipe.

Leg 15

Pipe leaves 32 after 12 darts but Anderson closes out the match with a superb 112 checkout on tops to book his place into the second round, despite not playing at his very best. He will face James Wade next time round.
