2020 BETFRED WORLD MATCHPLAY TO TAKE PLACE BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

The second day of the 2020 World Matchplay takes place at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire.

Last night was a superb night of darts with Simon Whitlock comfortably beating Ryan Joyce. Krzysztof Ratajski averaging over 107 in defeating Jermaine Wattimena. James Wade came through a tight match in extra time to see off Keegan Brown. Michael van Gerwen survived a scare to defeat Brendan Dolan and Gary Anderson produced a late surge to defeat Justin Pipe.

Coming up in night two we have the 2017 Champions League winner Mensur Suljovic taking on the reigning Czech Open champion Jamie Hughes, three time BDO world champion Glen Durrant facing off against 2019 European Championship quarter finalist Jeffrey de Zwaan, Defending champion Rob Cross takes on the inform German Gabriel Clemens, reigning world champion Peter Wright takes on a tough test against Portugal’s Jose De Sousa and multiple major runner up Michael Smith plays the former Austrian Darts Open champion Jonny Clayton.

Will the defending champion pass the first hurdle? Or will tonight bring some twists into the tale?

Matches are the best of 19 legs with each game must be won by two clear legs, with up to a maximum of five additional legs being played before the sixth additional leg is sudden-death. Should the match reach 12-12, then the 25th leg would be the final and deciding leg.

Mensur Suljovic v Jamie Hughes

Leg 1

Hughes hits the first 180 of the day but both players a guilty of missing big numbers when taking out finishes. Suljovic misses an earlier dart at double 3, but returns to hit it next visit after Hughes misses two darts at double to break! Suljovic 1-0 Hughes.

Leg 2

Both players trade 180’s before Hughes misses double 16 for a 92 finish. He returns to get it next visit for a 13 darter after Suljovic suffered a cruel bounce out on the bull, when taking out 90! Suljovic 1-1 Hughes.

Leg 3

Both players trade maximums for the second leg in a row before Suljovic takes out 56 on tops for a 14 darter to retake the lead. Suljovic 2-1 Hughes.

Leg 4

Suljovic hits his third maximum en route to leaving 16 after 9 darts and he finds double 4 with the last dart for a 12 break of throw. Suljovic 3-1 Hughes.

Leg 5

Hughes goes for a big risk in going for the 25 first on 90 but it doesn’t pay off as he’s denied a shot at double. And his risk is punished by Suljovic after he takes out a 101 finish on double 14 for a three leg lead at the break. Suljovic 4-1 Hughes.

Leg 6

Hughes fires in his fourth maximum of the game and then later takes out 83 on double 16 to claw a leg back! Suljovic 4-2 Hughes.

Leg 7

Another back for Hughes as he checks out 44 on double 16 with the final dart to go one behind of Suljovic. Suljovic 4-3 Hughes.

Leg 8

Both players trade 180’s before Suljovic pins double 16 for an 11 darter and to restore his break of throw! Suljovic 5-3 Hughes.

Leg 9

Suljovic misses the bull for a 121 checkout and a 6-3 lead! Hughes then breaks throw once more after pinning double 8 for a 14 darter! Suljovic 5-4 Hughes.

Leg 10

Suljovic hits his fifth 180, but then misses tops for a 78 finish. Hughes then lands double 10 and it’s all level into the second break. Suljovic 5-5 Hughes.

Leg 11

Suljovic misses darts at double 14 and 7, before landing double 2 to retake the lead. Suljovic 6-5 Hughes.

Leg 12

Hughes misses darts at double 16 and double 8 before hitting the latter next visit to level it up once more. Suljovic 6-6 Hughes.

Leg 13

Both players trade 180’s once more before Suljovic misses two darts at double and Hughes lands tops to go infront for the very first time! Suljovic 6-7 Hughes.

Leg 14

Excellent from Hughes as he lands a superb 118 checkout on tops to move within two of victory. Suljovic 6-8 Hughes.

Leg 15

Suljovic puts away his eighth maximum of the game and the later on takes out a superb 108 finish on his favourite double 14 to stay on Hughes’ tail. Suljovic 7-8 Hughes.

Leg 16

Hughes moves within a leg of victory thanks to a 65 finish on double 13. Suljovic 7-9 Hughes.

Leg 17

Suljovic isn’t going away as he plants his ninth maximum at the beginning of the leg and then later on takes out a superb 117 checkout on tops to stay alive. Suljovic 8-9 Hughes.

Leg 18

Suljovic misses double 16 for a 134 finish but returns to hit double 8 after Hughes missed bull for a 128 match winner. Into extra time we go! Suljovic 9-9 Hughes.

Leg 19 (Must win by 2 clear legs)

Suljovic begins the leg with his 10th maximum and then takes out double 8 with the last dart to move within a leg of the match. Suljovic 10-9 Hughes.

Leg 20 (Must win by 2 clear legs)

Hughes keeps the match going after checking out 61 on double 9. Suljovic 10-10 Hughes.

Leg 21 (Must win by 2 clear legs)

Hughes hits back to back maximums to leave 42 after 9 darts, but he misses double 16 and 8 to move a leg from glory again and Suljovic breaks his heart with a stunning 127 checkout on the bull. Suljovic 11-10 Hughes.

Leg 22 (Must win by 2 clear legs)

Hughes misses double 12 for a 97 finish and that’s his last shot as Suljovic crashes home a 112 checkout on double 16 to come from the dead and reach the second round!

Glen Durrant v Jeffrey de Zwaan

Leg 1

First blood to De Zwaan as he lands double 18 on his second attempt. Durrant 0-1 De Zwaan.

Leg 2

Durrant misses double 19 for a 95 finish but then returns to nail double 16 second dart for a 14 darter to level. Durrant 1-1 De Zwaan.

Leg 3

Both players hit their first 180’s before Durrant misses bull for an 87 finish. De Zwaan misses tops on 80 and Durrant gets the first break of throw after picking double 8! Durrant 2-1 De Zwaan.

Leg 4

Durrant moves two clear of De Zwaan after taking out 64 on double 8 for another 14 dart leg. Durrant 3-1 De Zwaan.

Leg 5

Durrant misses bull for an 87 finish but returns to hit double 8 for a three leg cushion at the first break. De Zwaan squanders two darts to cut the gap to one. Durrant 4-1 De Zwaan.

Leg 6

Durrant hits his second maximum of the game, but later on misses three clear darts at double 12 and double 6. De Zwaan eventually pulls out a classy 80 checkout on tops to stop the rot. Durrant 4-2 De Zwaan.

Leg 7

Both players trade maximums before Durrant takes out 85 on tops for an 11 darter and to restore his three leg lead. Durrant 5-2 De Zwaan.

Leg 8

Durrant misses two darts at double 14 for an 88 finish but returns to hit double 7 after De Zwaan missed the bull for the big fish. Durrant is looking solid. Durrant 6-2 De Zwaan.

Leg 9

Durrant misses double 16 for an 84 finish before De Zwaan takes out 71 on double 16 to cut the gap the three. Durrant 6-3 De Zwaan.

Leg 10

Durrant misses the bull for a 167 outshot but he returns to nail double 8 for another 14 dart leg and to go four clear at the second break. Durrant 7-3 De Zwaan.

Leg 11

Durrant kicks off with his fourth maximum but later on misses two darts at double 16. He returns to pin it first dart next visit and he goes five clear of De Zwaan. Durrant 8-3 De Zwaan.

Leg 12

Durrant kicks off the leg with maximum number 5! He misses double 16 and double 8 for an 86 finish but the Smoggie returns to land it first dart for a 13 darter and move within a leg of the match. Durrant 9-3 De Zwaan.

Leg 13

Both players trade maximums before De Zwaan misses tops for a 145 finish to stay alive! Durrant needs 86 for the match and he duly takes it out on the bull for a comfortable win and a solid performance! A 106.93 average will do very nicely for Duzza!

Rob Cross v Gabriel Clemens

Leg 1

Clemens misses double 18 for a 110 finish but he returns to pick out second dart next visit after Cross missed double 16 and double 8. An instant break for Clemens! Cross 0-1 Clemens.

Leg 2

Brilliant from Clemens as he piles in a superb 127 checkout on double 8 to double his lead, leaving Cross stranded on double 4. Cross 0-2 Clemens.

Leg 3

Cross hits the first 180 of the game to leave 105, but he misses double 16 in taking out that very finish. He then busts his score by hitting the big 16 when going for double 8, but the defending champion returns to hit it after Clemens missed tops for an 80 finish to go 3-0 up! Cross is on the board! Cross 1-2 Clemens.

Leg 4

Cross misses darts at double 14 and double 7 to level, but gets another opportunity after Clemens misses two darts at tops. But shows more frailties on the outer ring after missing double 2 and 1 and Clemens sweeps up double 10 to go two clear once more! Cross 1-3 Clemens.

Leg 5

Much more like it from Cross as the defending champion takes out 41 on double 16 for a much needed 14 darter and goes one behind at the first break. Cross 2-3 Clemens.

Leg 6

Cross is back on level terms after he takes out an 87 finish on double 8 for a 12 darter. Cross 3-3 Clemens.

Leg 7

Cross fires in his second maximum but it’s Clemens who gets first poke at the double. He misses double 16 for a 152 finish but the returns to land double 8 to retake the lead after Cross missed two more darts at doubles. Cross 3-4 Clemens.

Leg 8

BIG FISH ALERT!!! Clemens hits the jackpot after taking out the 170 finish for a 12 darter and to restore his two leg lead over Cross! Cross 3-5 Clemens.

Leg 9

Cross moves back to a leg behind after taking out a 76 finish on double 8! Cross 4-5 Clemens.

Leg 10

Class from the defending champion Cross as he piles in a 11 darter and a 94 finish on tops to go into the break level. Cross 5-5 Clemens.

Leg 11

More excellence from Cross as he takes out a superb 113 checkout on double 18 to move infront for the very first time! Cross 6-5 Clemens.

Leg 12

Clemens finally finds his first 180 for the match and then later takes out 72 on the bull to stop the rot. Cross 6-6 Clemens.

Leg 13

Clemens puts away his second 180 in as many legs and the German retakes the lead thanks to a 14 darter on tops. Great response after going behind! Cross 6-7 Clemens.

Leg 14

After landing his third 180, the surge continues for Clemens as he takes out 80 on double 10 for back to back 14 darters and for three on the spin. Cross 6-8 Clemens.

Leg 15

It’s now four maximums in four legs for Clemens but Cross eventually stops the rot on double 18! Cross 7-8 Clemens.

Leg 16

Clemens begins the leg with his fifth maximum and he makes it three 14 darters in four legs after taking out 56 on tops. The defending champion is one leg away from defeat! Cross 7-9 Clemens.

Leg 17

Class and guts from Cross as he takes out a 110 finish on double 15 under enormous pressure to stay alive! Cross 8-9 Clemens.

Leg 18

Cross begins the leg with his fourth maximum, but Clemens has a chance to send the defending champion packing, only to miss two darts at double 16. However Cross cannot save himself after missing three darts at double 18 and CLEMENS PINS DOUBLE 8 WITH HIS FIRST DART AND THE DEFENDING CHAMPION IS OUT IN ROUND 1! WHAT A WIN FOR CLEMENS!

He will face Krzysztof Ratajski in Round 2.

Peter Wright v Jose De Sousa

Leg 1

De Sousa misses double 12 for a 144 checkout and Wright gets the early break thanks to a 14 darter on tops. Wright 1-0 De Sousa.

Leg 2

An instant break back for De Sousa as he pins double 5 last darts after Wright missed the big number when taking out 66. Wright 1-1 De Sousa.

Leg 3

De Sousa gets the first maximum of the match and the Portugese then completes a stunning 12 darter in style with a 161 checkout! Wright 1-2 De Sousa.

Leg 4

Wright misses bull for an 85 finish but he returns to nail double 8 to level this match after De Sousa fails to take out 118! Wright 2-2 De Sousa.

Leg 5

De Sousa begins the leg with his second 180 and then leaves 32 after 12 darts. He then slots double 16 second dart to take the advantage into the first break! Wright 2-3 De Sousa.

Leg 6

Wright finally lands his first 180 of the match but then misses two darts at double 8 and busts on 76. De Sousa finds double 5 last dart for a break and to open up a two leg lead on the reigning world champion! Wright 2-4 De Sousa.

Leg 7

De Sousa puts away his third maximum and he puts Wright in a spot of bother after taking out 56 on tops for a 14 darter and to move three legs clear! Wright 2-5 De Sousa.

Leg 8

Much more like it from Wright as he takes out 48 on double 16 for a 14 darter of his own to stop the rot! Wright 3-5 De Sousa.

Leg 9

De Sousa misses darts at double 16 and double 8, but returns to hit double 4 and restore his three leg cushion after Wright missed two at tops for a 65 finish to claw the gap to one! Wright 3-6 De Sousa.

Leg 10

A second maximum is hit for Wright and he goes on to complete a 12 darter, thanks to an 86 finish on double 16. The world champion goes into the second break two behind. Wright 4-6 De Sousa.

Leg 11

De Sousa retains his three leg lead after taking out a superb 101 finish on tops. Wright 4-7 De Sousa.

Leg 12

Wright cuts the gap to two once more thanks to a 90 finish on double 15. Wright 5-7 De Sousa.

Leg 13

Wright misses double 16 for a 106 checkout to move within one and De Sousa takes out double 10 first dart to move within two of a big upset! Wright 5-8 De Sousa.

Leg 14

Wright hits his third maximum to leave 80 and the world champion takes it out in two for a 14 darter. Wright 6-8 De Sousa.

Leg 15

It’s game on now as Wright fires in a superb 144 checkout on double 12 to finally get the break back! Wright 7-8 De Sousa.

Leg 16

Wright hits his fourth maximum to leave 61 and the world champion takes it out on double 16 for three on the spin and to level this match! Wright 8-8 De Sousa.

Leg 17

Wright puts the pressure on after hitting his fifth 180 to leave 45 and it works after De Sousa misses darts at double 18 and double 9. Wright then takes out 45 on double 16 for four in a row and he will throw for the match! What a turnaround! Wright 9-8 De Sousa.

Leg 18

Wright misses tops for a 120 checkout for the match but De Sousa fails to take out tops to stay in the match. Wright then returns to slot home tops second dart and from 8-5 down he wins five on the spin to deny the Portugese thrower! Brilliant fight from the world champion and he faces Glen Durrant in the second round!

Michael Smith v Jonny Clayton

Leg 1

Clayton misses bull for a 108 finish, then misses darts at double 8 and double 4. Smith misses tops for a 66 finish but he returns to hit it for an early break after Clayton misses three at double 4! Smith 1-0 Clayton.

Leg 2

Both players put in their first 180’s before Clayton breaks straight back with a superb 126 checkout on the bull! Smith 1-1 Clayton.

Leg 3

It’s another break of throw as Smith puts away a 103 checkout on double 18 after Clayton’s two double 18 attempts on 90 fails. Smith 2-1 Clayton.

Leg 4

Clayton misses double 14 for a 121 checkout and Smith steps in with double 12 for a 13 darter and for the first hold of throw in this match! Smith 3-1 Clayton.

Leg 5

More double trouble for Clayton as he misses two at tops to cut the deficit to one and Smith duly converts 59 on double 10 to go three ahead at the first break. Smith 4-1 Clayton.

Leg 6

Smith rapidly makes it four on the spin after taking out 92 on double 10 for a quick 12 darter! Smith 5-1 Clayton.

Leg 7

It’s becoming a rout now as Smith takes out a 126 checkout on the bull himself to move five clear of Clayton. Smith 6-1 Clayton.

Leg 8

Smith puts in his second maximum and then leaves double 4 after 12 darts. Smith then picks it out first dart and it’s six in a row! Smith 7-1 Clayton.

Leg 9

It’s just a rampant display from Smith as he begins the leg with his third maximum and then takes out tops for back to back 13 darters. Seven in a row! Smith 8-1 Clayton.

Leg 10

Clayton finds his second 180 but Smith has a chance to go ahead 9-1 but misses tops for a 120 checkout. Clayton sinks a pivotal double 12 for a 13 darter of his own and to finally stop the Smith charge! Smith leads by six going into the second break. Smith 8-2 Clayton.

Leg 11

Smith misses tops again to move within a leg of the match and Clayton lands double 10 to pull another leg back! Smith 8-3 Clayton.

Leg 12

Smith starts off with maximum number four and later on he takes out double 18 for a superb 10 darter and move within a leg of glory! Smith 9-3 Clayton.

Leg 13

Smith misses double 9 for an 83 finish but Clayton can’t save himself after missing two at double 19. Smith returns to hit double 9 and he rounds off a brilliant performance with a 101 average, 4 180’s and 10/16 on the doubles. Clayton just had no answer to Bully Boy today! Smith will face Mensur Suljovic in Round 2.
