2020 BETFRED WORLD MATCHPLAY TO TAKE PLACE BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

Day 5 of the 2020 World Matchplay takes place at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire.

Last night was a night filled with shocks and surprises. In the final first round match, Nathan Aspinall was sent packing by Belgium’s Dimitri Van den Bergh!

Later on the second round matches began! Michael Smith edged past Mensur Suljovic in extra time, Gary Anderson defied James Wade, Simon Whitlock produced a stunning display to knock out Michael van Gerwen and Krzysztof Ratajski defeated Gabriel Clemens in extra time also.

Tonight we have the final four matches of the second round and by the end of tonight, we will know our quarter final lineup! Tonight features former World Grand Prix and Players Championship finals winner Daryl Gurney take on former UK Open runner up Vincent van der Voort, Belgium’s Dimitri Van den Bergh plays reigning European Matchplay champion Joe Cullen, reigning world champion Peter Wright faces three time world champion Glen Durrant in an all world champions clash, and finally the guy that Durrant beat to win his first world title, Danny Noppert, will face two time world champion Adrian Lewis.

Second round matches are the best of 21 legs with each game must be won by two clear legs, with up to a maximum of five additional legs being played before the sixth additional leg is sudden-death. Should the match reach 13-13, then the 27th leg would be the final and deciding leg.

Daryl Gurney v Vincent van der Voort

Leg 1

Fine start from Van der Voort as he breaks immediately with a 12 darter and an 81 finish on double 12. Gurney 0-1 Van der Voort.

Leg 2

Van der Voort misses tops for a 116 finish, but returns to take out double 10 to double his lead, after Gurney misses tops for a 71 checkout to level! Gurney 0-2 Van der Voort.

Leg 3

Van der Voort puts in two 180’s in this leg, and he goes on to take out double 16 for a 45 finish and an 11 darter. Fine start from the Dutchman. Gurney 0-3 Van der Voort.

Leg 4

Van der Voort misses tops for a 70 finish, but he returns to land double 10 after Gurney missed three at tops! Gurney 0-4 Van der Voort.

Leg 5

Van der Voort completes a clean sweep of the session thanks to a 79 finish on tops! The Dutchman is five clear at the first break. Gurney 0-5 Van der Voort.

Leg 6

Gurney finds his first 180 of the game to leave himself double 12, and the Northern Irishman duly takes it out first dart to finally get on the board. Gurney 1-5 Van der Voort.

Leg 7

Another one back for Gurney after he puts away tops first dart. Gurney 2-5 Van der Voort.

Leg 8

Van der Voort moves four clear once more, thanks to an 80 finish on double 10! Gurney 2-6 Van der Voort.

Leg 9

Van der Voort nails his third maximum, before Gurney later on misses double 16 for a 70 finish. Van der Voort then once again takes out 80 on double 10 for a 14 darter! Van der Voort back to five ahead. Gurney 2-7 Van der Voort.

Leg 10

Van der Voort’s brilliant darts continues after he checks out 96 on double 9 to go six ahead at the second break. He’s playing really well here! Gurney 2-8 Van der Voort.

Leg 11

Van der Voort hits his fourth 180, but misses double 8 and then hits the big 18 when trying to hit double 4 and busts. He misses double 8 again next time but makes no mistake on double 4 and he’s two away from the quarter finals! Gurney 2-9 Van der Voort.

Leg 12

Nothing can stop Van der Voort at the moment, after he lands his fifth 180, and he then picks out double 8 to move within one of glory! Gurney 2-10 Van der Voort!

Leg 13

Van der Voort misses a match dart at bull for a 73 finish but Gurney finds a 99 finish on double 16 from nowhere to stay alive! Gurney 3-10 Van der Voort.

Leg 14

Gurney misses bull for a 161 finish but Van der Voort then misses tops for a match winning 132 checkout. Gurney then returns to take out 25 on double 8 and he claws another leg back! Gurney 4-10 Van der Voort.

Leg 15

Gurney finds his second 180 of the match and he then takes out 82 on tops to make it three on the spin! He’s not going down just yet! Gurney 5-10 Van der Voort.

Leg 16

VAN DER VOORT GETS IT DONE! He takes out 94 on double 8 to defeat Gurney and reaches the quarter finals of the Matchplay for the first time in 11 years!

Dimitri Van den Bergh v Joe Cullen

Leg 1

WHAT A START FROM VAN DEN BERGH! He takes the first leg with a superb 105 checkout on double 16! Van den Bergh 1-0 Cullen.

Leg 2

Cullen misses tops for a 73 finish, but swiftly returns to land double 10 after Van den Bergh missed tops for a 77 finish. Van den Bergh 1-1 Cullen.

Leg 3

Cullen lands the first 180 of the match, and then gets the first break thanks to a brilliant 112 checkout on the bull! Van den Bergh 1-2 Cullen.

Leg 4

Van den Bergh lands his first 180, before Cullen misses two at double 16 for a 74 finish! Van den Bergh finds another ton plus finish, this time a 118 checkout on double 19 to break back! Van den Bergh 2-2 Cullen.

Leg 5

Cullen misses double 10 for a 140 finish, before missing two more at double 4! Van den Bergh misses double 10 on 100 and Cullen finds a pressure double 1 to take the lead into the first break. Van den Bergh 2-3 Cullen.

Leg 6

Cullen moves two clear for the first time, thanks to a 14 darter and a 74 finish on double 16! Van den Bergh 2-4 Cullen.

Leg 7

Cullen finds his second 180 of the game, and then later on misses bull for the big fish! He returns to mop up 25 on double 8 for back to back 14 darters and to go three clear! Van den Bergh 2-5 Cullen.

Leg 8

Lovely from Van den Bergh as he finds a 138 checkout on double 9 to stop the rot! Van den Bergh 3-5 Cullen.

Leg 9

Van den Bergh claws back to one behind after taking out 48 on double 8. Van den Bergh 4-5 Cullen.

Leg 10

Van den Bergh misses two at double 16 for a 51 finish before Cullen misses the same bed on 62. Van den Bergh then hits the big 11 second dart when trying to get double 8 and Cullen slots home double 16 to go two clear at the second break! Van den Bergh 4-6 Cullen.

Leg 11

Van den Bergh finds double 14 second dart and moves within one of Cullen again! Van den Bergh 5-6 Cullen.

Leg 12

Van den Bergh misses three at double 12 to level and Cullen finds double 8 last dart to restore his two leg lead. Van den Bergh 5-7 Cullen.

Leg 13

Both players trade maximums before Cullen takes out 56 on tops to go three ahead again and with it an 11 darter. Van den Bergh 5-8 Cullen.

Leg 14

Cullen misses tops and tens to go four clear and Van den Bergh pins double 8 to close it back to two! Van den Bergh 6-8 Cullen.

Leg 15

Van den Bergh puts in two maximums in the leg and then misses double 4 for an 84 finish. He eventually lands double 1 last dart and he’s one behind again! Van den Bergh 7-8 Cullen.

Cullen misses three darts at double 16 and double 8, which proves costly as Van den Bergh lands tops to level! Van den Bergh 8-8 Cullen.

Leg 17

Van den Bergh takes the lead for the first time since the first leg, thanks to a 104 finish on double 16! Van den Bergh 9-8 Cullen.

Leg 18

Cullen stops the rot in style with a ton plus finish of his own, taking out 118 on tops! Van den Bergh 9-9 Cullen.

Leg 19

Van den Bergh moves within a leg of victory after posting double 4 with the last dart. Van den Bergh 10-9 Cullen.

Leg 20

Van den Bergh hits his fifth 180 to leave 58, but a dart out of the board allows him just one dart at tops which he misses! He misses two at 10’s and two at 7’s before landing double 1 to secure his first ever World Matchplay quarter final.

Peter Wright v Glen Durrant

Leg 1

Wright kicks off in world champion style with a 180 but later on misses six darts at double to close it out! Durrant misses a dart at tops to steal it on 74 and Wright lands double 5 to save the first leg! Wright 1-0 Durrant.

Leg 2

Durrant misses tops for a 118 finish, but the three time world champion returns to land double 10, after Wright missed two at tops to break on 56! Wright 1-1 Durrant.

Leg 3

Wright misses two at tops on 60, but returns to nail it first dart, after Durrant missed double 16 for a 91 finish! Wright 2-1 Durrant.

Leg 4

Durrant misses double 16 for a 112 finish and Wright takes advantage to claim the first break, thanks to a 76 finish on tops! Wright 3-1 Durrant.

Leg 5

Wright begins the leg with his second 180 and he completes a stunning dart 12 darter with a 56 finish on double 10. The reigning world champion is three to the good at the first break. Wright 4-1 Durrant.

Leg 6

Durrant kicks off with his first maximum and then completes a 12 dart leg of his own with a 99 checkout on double 16! Wright 4-2 Durrant.

Leg 7

Wright lands his third 180, but misses tops and tens on 56, and Durrant steps in with a superb 108 finish on tops to move within one! Wright 4-3 Durrant.

Leg 8

Durrant misses tops for a 73 finish, but returns to land double 10 to level after Wright hit the big 15, when attempting the same double. Wright 4-4 Durrant.

Leg 9

From 4-1 behind, Durrant moves ahead thanks to a superb 104 finish on double 16! Wright 4-5 Durrant.

Leg 10

Wright puts in two 180’s en route to leaving 45. He misses two darts at double 16 for it and Durrant makes it five in a row, thanks to a 92 finish on double 16! Duzza two up at the break! What a turnaround! Wright 4-6 Durrant.

Leg 11

Durrant starts the leg with his second maximum and he goes on to make it six on the spin, thanks to an 11 darter on double 16! Wright 4-7 Durrant.

Leg 12

Durrant misses tops for a 74 finish, then proceeds to miss three at double 10! Wright then steps in to land double 4 to stop the rot. Wright 5-7 Durrant.

Leg 13

Wright lands his 7th 180, and then moves back to within one of Durrant, thanks to an 86 finish on the bull! Wright 6-7 Durrant.

Leg 14

It’s level again after Wright makes it back to back 12 darters, taking out 121 on the bull! Wright 7-7 Durrant.

Leg 15

Wright misses double 16 and double 8, before eventually landing double 2 at the next visit for four on the spin! He’s back in the lead! Wright 8-7 Durrant.

Leg 16

Wright lands his eighth 180, but then misses tops to take it out! Durrant then takes out 76 on double 8 to stop Wright’s surge and level. Wright 8-8 Durrant.

Leg 17

Durrant lands his third 180 and leaves 54 after 9 darts. He misses tops and tens to take it out, but eventually lands double 5 to move back infront of this topsy turvy game! Wright 8-9 Durrant.

Leg 18

Wright misses bull for a 121 finish to level and Durrant steps in to take out 74 on double 16 to move within one of glory! Wright 8-10 Durrant.

Leg 19

Durrant lands his fourth 180 and later on seals the match with a 90 checkout on double 8! He’s into his second Matchplay quarter final in a row and what a topsy turvy game it was!

Danny Noppert v Adrian Lewis

Leg 1

Lewis hits the first 180 to leave 79, but he doesn’t get a shot at it after Noppert checks out 89 on double 5! Noppert 1-0 Lewis.

Leg 2

Lewis levels up with a superb 107 checkout on tops. Noppert 1-1 Lewis.

Leg 3

Noppert misses double 16 for a 146 finish, but returns to hit it first dart for a 13 darter. Noppert 2-1 Lewis.

Leg 4

Lewis misses tops for a 75 finish, but returns to nail it second dart for a 14 darter in response. Noppert 2-2 Lewis.

Leg 5

Advantage Noppert at the first break after he takes out 72 on tops! Noppert 3-2 Lewis.

Leg 6

Lewis hits his second 180 at the start and he proceeds to make a stunning 10 dart leg on double. Noppert 3-3 Lewis.

Leg 7

Lewis gets the first break of the match, thanks to an 88 finish on double 14. Noppert 3-4 Lewis.

Lewis misses five darts at tops before Noppert misses bull for an 84 finish. Lewis wastes three more darts at tops and tens and Noppert nails double 8 to steal the leg and break back! Noppert 4-4 Lewis.

Noppert moves back ahead again, thanks to a 107 checkout on double 18! Noppert 5-4 Lewis.

Leg 10

Lewis misses tops for a 70 finish, before returning to hit double 10 to level up at the second break! Noppert 5-5 Lewis.
