The 2019 Unibet European Championships got underway in Göttingen, Germany last night and immediately served up a monumental shock.
European Championships Day 1 review
Smudger sends MVG to the commentary booth
Fresh from two televised tournament wins MVG will have traveled to Germany full of confidence. By the end of the evening he was looking at a debut as a TV pundit for ITV4 having been sent packing by Ross “Smudger” Smith.
Playing arguably the game of his life, Smith took the Green Machine to a deciding leg where he cooly checked out 114 leaving MVG waiting on 88 for the chance that never came. A huge shock but just rewards for Smith who has been playing some quality darts this year.
Earlier in the evening Ricky Evans served up a shock of his own. Glen Durrant has been in fine form since his switch from the BDO at the start of this year but “Rapid” took a tense last leg for a 6-5 win. Evans will have been expecting MVG in round two but instead will face Smith for a place in the quarter finals.
Clayton whitewashes defending Champ Wade
Performance of the night in terms of dominance went to Johnny Clayton. The Welshman averaged 111.33 in a stunning display crushing defending champion “The Machine” 6-0.
Dave Chisnall and Joe Cullen each put in impressive performances of their own. Chizzy defeated Dimintri van den Bergh 6-3 whilst Cullen toppled the King 6-2.
Simon Whitlock has been somewhat searching for his former self this year and maybe his 6-1 thrashing of Adrian “Jackpot” Lewis is a sign he has found some of it. A strong end to the season would certainly be welcome for the Wizard.
Elsewhere former world champ Rob Cross had to see off a late fightback from Darren Webster but came through a solid 6-3 winner. With some bristles growing back on his recently shaven head Daryl Gurney managed to battle through 6-4 against William O’Conner. Maybe Samson hasn’t lost his power, time will tell.
For a different look at the evenings play we turn to our resident pro. Matthew “Primetime” Edgar is one of our sponsored pros here at the new look DartsMad and is responsible for the world (in)famous Edgar.tv.
For those of you not familiar with Edgar TV yet we can strongly recommend his often hilarious take on the world of darts. Matt also does some very good reviews of tournament play, one of which covers day 1, enjoy!
