Colourful Peter Wright was celebrating on Sunday night after claiming victory at the Melbourne Masters to win his second career World Series of Darts title after success in Germany in 2017.
The native Scotsman known as Snakebite took down Michael Smith in Sunday’s final 11-8 in the best of 21 legs.
It was a sense of relief for Wright who reached the final of this event last year only to lose to Phil Taylor and sporting his trademark mohawk dyed green with a painted snake on the side, Wright told Sky Sports afterward that ‘Winning here feels great’.
On his way to victory, 48-year-old Wright took the scalp of number one seed Michael Van Gerwen at the last four stage in a sublime 11-7 win.
For Dutchman Van Gerwen it was a disappointment not to reach the final after claiming victory in the tournament prior in Auckland especially after receiving criticism for a host of poor performances in July.
However, the same can not be said for finalist Smith who was delighted to be contesting once again in a year the 27-year-old Englishman has come of age after claiming victory at the Shanghai Masters after a dominant 8-2 win against fellow Englishman Rob Cross in the final.
Speaking to Sky the former World Youth Champion said: “It’s another final for me though and more proof that I’m getting to where I want to be, things are starting to improve and I’m happy.”
Where Next?
The Word Darts Masters stays in Australia this week and heads to Queensland and the art gallery ridden city of Brisbane for the inaugural staging of the event from Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The draw is yet to be made but much like in Melbourne, Dutchman Michael Van Gerwen heads to Brisbane as the number one seed.
Round one gets underway on Friday (17th) with the opening round boasting a knockout best of 11 legs.
