Peter Manley, John Part and Colin Lloyd all departed on day five in quite different ways. Manley was taken out by Havenga after a disastrous start saw him 3-0 down. He fought back well to force a deciding leg but couldn’t keep the resurgence going and Havenga held his nerve to progress. Part found Mason hungry for revenge after last years battle went in favour of the Canadian.
Mason got his sweet revenge with an assured performance in which Part couldn’t keep up with the pace. Colin Lloyd will be devastated this morning after throwing away a 3-0 lead against a man who is never beaten. Credit to Barney for finding the reserves to come back and win the match but missed doubles on match point will haunt Jaws for some time. Barney was never in front in the match until the bull-off in the tie-break leg. He stole the darts and that was enough to turn the match in his favour. This was a game that will live long in the memory but will be no consolation to Lloyd today. Barney marches on.
The other games saw teenage debutant Rico Vonck continue his fine form against Brian Cyr, while Adrian Lewis, Terry Jenkins and Darren Webster all went through. Vonck faces his idol Barneveld next and will simply enjoy the occasion after earning his place with some top throwing. Lewis produced a master class to get past Wayne Jones who will wonder what hit him. Jones was on the receiving end of a sub five minute first set and deserves full credit for hanging in and forcing a deciding set. Lewis hit a stunning 13 180’s in the game and only a few missed double marred an almost faultless performance. His confidence is sky high and he will take some beating this week.
Terry Jenkins had to dig deep to get past Steve Beaton in the deciding set and will take on James Wade next. Beaton went 2-0 down but fought back to get to 2-2 and then 3-3. He ran out of steam in the decider losing it 3-1 to a relieved Jenkins. Darren Webster won the battle of the qualifiers winning four consecutive sets after losing the first. Gray began well but Webster hit his stride and walked away with it to set up a clash with Havenga.
