Robbie Green Interview: Discussing Q School, Injury Problems, Current State Of BDO And Much More!

Carter caught up with Robbie Green for DartsMad ahead of PDC Q School starting on Thursday. ‘Kong’ has suffered with a knee injury recently and has effected him on the oche. He lost his Tour Card in 2018 and competed at last years PDC Q School, but it wasn’t to be.

Robbie discussed preparation for Q School, injury problems, current state of the BDO and much more.

Q1. Firstly Robbie thanks for joining DartsMad. How are you and how much are you looking forward to Q School coming up in a few days?

I’m doing well thanks, yeah looking forward to playing again after a long lay off, I’m sure it will feel a bit strange at 1st but will soon get back into the swing of things bit like riding a bike.

Q2. You have been struggling with a knee injury for awhile now and you are recovering well thankfully, where is your knee at now and how comfortable do you feel throwing?

I’ve had the knee problem since I was 15 and had 7 operations on it over the years, about 5 years ago I seen a specialist who said I need the replacement doing but to carry on till it totally gave in all together which it what I did.

I got to the point where I was eating painkillers like smarties trying to get through a tournament then do the same the next day, it was stupid but didn’t have a choice, now I’ve had the replacement done things are a lot better. Im no longer on painkillers so have a clear head and am not floating through games. It took a while to settle down but it feels great now and I can walk for miles, no limp and pain free, can get a bit stiff at night if I’ve done a lot but not painful.

Q3. How has your preparation went heading INTO Q School?

Prep has only started today really, I’ve been throwing in the house vs the laptop but it’s not the same as playing a real person.

My mate came today who is also doing Q school and has held a card before and we had a good practice session, went really well and will do that each day now till the real thing on Thursday.

Q4. There’s alot of talent this year at Q School as there always is, it will be tough but how confident are you of getting your tour card back as you’ve been there and done it there before?

Yeah a lot of talent with not a lot of cards up for grabs,I’m confident I can beat any player in front of me weather I will or not will remain to be seen but I’m up for it and ready to rumble as I’m sure they will be.

Q5. If you fail to get a PDC Tour Card, will you be playing on the PDC Challenge Tour this year all being well?

Yeah I’ll do challenge tour if not, probably do me good because I’ve been out for nearly 2 years and even before was struggling through day by day.

Q6. We know you have been a star in the BDO many years ago, but what do you think of the recent affairs currently happening in the BDO at the moment?

It’s a shame what’s happened over in the BDO, I feel sorry for the players who have played all year and put a lot of money and miles into qualifying for the o2 to have prize money slashed. Too many sharks have been feeding off the BDO and now its down to bare bones. The chairman can’t take all the blame but he hasn’t helped matters fiddling draws and getting involved in rows on social media, hence lack of sponsors.

Q7. Do you think it’s the end of the BDO now or do you think they can sort it out between them and bring it back to where they belong?

Yes, they don’t have the money, WDF will take over events and county darts will still run as normal but I think there will be a lot of changes to the points system.

Q8. Finally, do you think if there wasn’t a BDO, a lot of PDC Players wouldn’t be where they are now?

The BDO is where most players start out, super league, county etc, but the PDC has the youth tour running lovely and add the JDC to that the PDC is now producing the next crop of players themselves, but not every young player can get to them, so this is where the BDO comes into it for them so they can play County youth and super league and try an break into the full county set up and maybe get into there international team so the BDO still has a part to play in producing players.

Many thanks Robbie for taking time out for the interview and all of us at DartsMad wish you all the best at Q School.
